Thoughtful care before, during and after surgery

Neutering for Dogs, Cats and Rabbits

Neutering can prevent unwanted pregnancies and offer important health and behavioural benefits. Our vets provide individual advice for dogs, cats and rabbits at our Llantrisant, Caerphilly and Whitchurch practices.

Making the right neutering decision for your pet

Neutering is a routine surgical procedure: castration removes the testicles in male pets, while spaying removes the ovaries and usually the womb in females. It prevents pregnancy and can reduce the risk of certain reproductive diseases. Depending on the animal, it may also reduce hormone-related behaviours such as roaming, spraying or fighting.

There is no single ideal age for every pet. Species, breed, size, sex, health, lifestyle and development all influence the best timing, particularly for dogs. Our veterinary team will discuss the potential benefits and considerations with you, examine your pet and recommend an approach based on their individual needs. We will also guide you through preparation and recovery.

Common Questions

Frequently asked questions

When should my pet be neutered?
The best time depends on your pet’s species, breed, sex, size, health and lifestyle. Cats are often neutered while young, while the timing for dogs can vary considerably. Book an appointment so we can give advice tailored to your pet.
Recovery varies between animals and procedures. Most pets need a quiet period, restricted activity and protection of the surgical wound while it heals. We will provide specific discharge instructions and arrange any recommended post-operative checks.
Neutering does not change your pet’s underlying personality. It may reduce some behaviours driven by reproductive hormones, but learned behaviours may continue. We can discuss what is realistic for your individual pet.
