Advanced imaging to help us see more clearly

X-Rays, Ultrasound & Diagnostic Imaging

Diagnostic imaging helps our veterinary team investigate illness, injury and ongoing health concerns in greater detail. Imaging services are available across Live Well Vets in South Wales, with equipment and availability varying by practice.

Helping Us Investigate Your Pet’s Health

X-rays, ultrasound and CT scanning can give our veterinary team valuable information about structures inside your pet’s body and help guide further investigation or treatment. CT scanning is available at our Caerphilly practice for cases that need more detailed cross-sectional imaging.

The most appropriate type of imaging depends on what we need to investigate. Some examinations can be performed while your pet is awake, while others may require sedation so we can obtain clear, useful images safely.

Your vet will explain why imaging is recommended, what the procedure involves and whether any preparation, sedation or follow-up testing is likely to be needed.

Digital X-Rays

Digital X-rays allow us to examine bones, joints and areas such as the chest and abdomen in detail. They can help identify fractures, joint changes, lung problems and other internal concerns.

Our digital X-ray facilities help us obtain clear images quickly so your vet can assess the findings and discuss any recommended next steps.

Ultrasound

Ultrasound uses sound waves to create real-time images of your pet’s internal organs and soft tissues. It can be particularly useful when investigating areas such as the liver, kidneys, bladder and gastrointestinal tract.

Because ultrasound does not use radiation, many examinations can be carried out with your pet awake, although sedation may sometimes be recommended depending on the area being examined.

CT Scanning

For cases that need more detailed imaging, our Caerphilly practice has an in-house CT scanner. CT produces highly detailed cross-sectional images and can help investigate more complex problems involving areas such as the head, spine, joints, chest and internal organs.

Learn more about CT scanning or, for veterinary professionals, refer a patient for CT.

Live Well Pet Club membership includes an annual veterinary health examination, an additional nurse health check at 6 months and 10% off in-house lab tests. These routine checks and discounted lab tests can support earlier investigation when something about your pet’s health changes.

What to expect

What to Expect From Diagnostic Imaging

Choosing the Right Scan

Your vet will recommend the most appropriate type of imaging, whether X-ray, ultrasound or CT scanning, based on what needs to be investigated.

Clear, Detailed Images

X-rays, ultrasound and CT scanning can reveal different levels of detail about bones, joints, organs and other internal structures. CT is particularly useful when more detailed cross-sectional images are needed.

Comfort and Safety

Some X-rays and ultrasound examinations can be performed while your pet is awake. CT scanning usually requires sedation or anaesthesia so your pet remains still and we can obtain clear, accurate images safely.

Results and Next Steps

Your vet will explain what the images show, whether further tests are needed and what the findings mean for your pet.

Common Questions

Frequently asked questions

What types of diagnostic imaging do you offer?
Depending on the problem we are investigating, your pet may have X-rays, ultrasound or CT scanning. Your vet will explain which type of imaging is most appropriate for your pet and what it can help us investigate.
Not always. Some imaging can be carried out while your pet is awake, but sedation may be recommended if movement would make it difficult to obtain clear, useful images.
In many cases, your vet can discuss the initial findings with you promptly after the images have been reviewed. If further interpretation or tests are needed, we will explain the expected next steps.
