What is a CT Scan
What is a CT Scan and Why Does My Pet Need One?
A CT (Computed Tomography) scan is an advanced imaging technique that provides far more detail than standard X-rays. It takes multiple images and creates a 3D picture of your pet’s body.
CT scans are useful for:
- Investigating complex conditions
- Assessing bones, joints, and soft tissues
- Helping plan surgery or guide treatment decisions

Payment terms
If you have an open insurance claim, we can invoice your veterinary practice directly – we just need confirmation from them first.
If we have not received confirmation that your veterinary practice can be invoiced, full payment will be required on the day of the CT scan.
We’re unable to process direct insurance claims on your behalf, but we can help you submit the claim to your insurance company afterwards so they can reimburse you directly.

Before Your Appointment
Fasting Instructions
- If your pet is under 6 months old, please speak to the team as fasting instructions may differ.
To Help Everything Run Smoothly
- Blood tests should ideally be completed by your regular vet within 3 weeks.
- Your vet will review these results to ensure your pet is fit for anaesthesia and contrast.
- This helps avoid delays or the possibility of the scan being postponed on the day but we can do these here on the day if they haven’t already been done.

Potential Risks & Complications
All procedures carry some risk. We take every precaution to keep your pet safe, but the following are important to be aware of.
General Anaesthetic & CT Scan – Important Information
To carry out the CT scan, your pet will need sedation or a general anaesthetic. These procedures are commonly performed and most pets recover well. However, all anaesthesia carries inherent risks, including rare but serious complications.
These may include:
- Changes in blood pressure or body temperature
- Vomiting or regurgitation (which can affect breathing)
- Reactions to medications or contrast dye (usually mild)
- Swelling or bruising at the injection site
- Risk may be higher in pets that are very young, elderly, overweight, flat-faced (brachycephalic), or have existing medical conditions.
Your pet will be assessed beforehand, and we tailor the anaesthetic and monitoring to reduce risk as much as possible.
We’ll talk everything through with you on the day and answer any questions you may have.
